Known issues

  • Cam chain tensioner wear (Check)

    Listen for rattle from the front of the engine on cold start, settling as revs rise. Given the age of every remaining bike, treat the tensioner as a preventative-replacement item even if quiet.

  • CDI unit failure (Check)

    Seat pressure on the CDI unit (mounted under the seat) is reported to crack internal solder joints over time, causing intermittent ignition failure. Wiggle-test the seat area with the bike running; ask whether the CDI has ever been re-soldered or replaced.

  • Exhaust system corrosion (Info)

    Steel downpipes and silencer corrode without regular maintenance. Mostly cosmetic and doesn't affect running, but a full replacement system is expensive — factor it into the price if the exhaust is already rusted through.

  • Frame and subframe corrosion (Dealbreaker)

    Every surviving example is now 35+ years old. Check the steering head area, subframe rails and footpeg brackets closely for rust — surface rust can be treated, but pitting or cracking around welds is a walk-away. TODO(verify): get a second, more specific source on frame corrosion patterns particular to the XRV650 versus the later XRV750 — forum threads confirm subframe corrosion is a recurring topic but this guide has not yet pinned down a definitive "known weak point" location.

  • Fuel pump failure (Check)

    The original electric fuel pump is known to fail after a relatively low mileage. Confirm the engine starts promptly from cold and doesn't cut out or surge under load — both point at a tired pump.

  • Import history and paperwork (Check)

    The XRV650 was never officially sold new in the UK — every example here is a private/grey import (commonly from Japan or mainland Europe). Verify the V5C, check the import history matches the speedo (often km/h, which is fine for MOT but worth confirming against the logbook), and ask for any SVA/IVA or first-registration paperwork. TODO(verify): confirm current DVLA age-related type approval exemption details for a bike of this age before repeating specific compliance claims to a buyer.

  • Regulator/rectifier failure (Check)

    The OEM diode-type regulator/rectifier is a known weak point on Honda V-twins of this era — it runs hot and can fail in a way that takes out bulbs, fuses and the battery with it. Check battery condition and look for a non-standard (MOSFET) unit already fitted as a sign of preventative maintenance.

History

The bike that started it all

Before the Africa Twin meant a 750, then a 1000, then a 1100 twin with a DCT gearbox and a colour dash, it meant this: the XRV650, launched by Honda on 20 May 1988 and built, in relatively small numbers, only for the 1988 and 1989 model years (frame code RD03, sold as the XRV650J in 1988 and XRV650K in 1989). It's the bike that translated Honda's Paris-Dakar-winning NXR750 rally racer into something you could ride to the shops — mesh headlight guard, saddle-shaped 25-litre fuel tank, suede-effect seat and all — before Honda bored it out to 742cc for 1990 and the RD04 XRV750 took over as "the" Africa Twin most people remember.

That short production run is exactly why the XRV650 is worth a second look now. It's rarer, it's lighter (185kg dry versus the 750's heavier kerb weight), and the styling is the purest expression of the Dakar concept before later models softened it. It's also, in the UK at least, a bike you need to go in on with your eyes open.

Sources agree on 1988-1989 for worldwide production (Wikipedia, Visordown, MSL Magazine, and Wemoto's own parts catalogue, which lists the XRV650J as a 1988 model and XRV650K as 1989, all converge on this). Honda's own Global Africa Twin history page confirms the XRV750 succeeded it for the 1990 model year, launched December 1989 — which lines up with 1989 being the XRV650's last year, though this guide hasn't cross-checked a Honda factory production-end date more precise than that. If you find a bike titled or documented as a 1990 XRV650 (as opposed to an early XRV750), treat that as worth double-checking rather than assuming the sources above are wrong.

The UK angle: it's a grey import

This is the single most important thing to understand before you go looking: the XRV650 was never officially sold new in the UK. Honda UK's Africa Twin story starts with the XRV750 in 1990. Every XRV650 on UK roads today — and the classic auction houses (Collecting Cars, Iconic Auctioneers) do sell them from time to time — arrived as a private or dealer import, typically from Japan or mainland Europe.

That's not a reason to avoid one. It is a reason to be more careful than usual with paperwork:

  • Check the V5C matches the bike in front of you, and ask how and when it was first registered in the UK.
  • Speedo will very likely read km/h rather than mph — that's normal and won't fail an MOT, but make sure the recorded mileage history (MOT certificates, service stamps) is internally consistent once you convert units.
  • Ask for any import paperwork, NOVA/customs history, or prior registration documents from the country of origin if the seller has them. It's not usually a legal requirement to produce these today for an older bike, but a seller who has them has usually looked after the bike properly in every other respect too.

What it's like to own

None of the above should read as "avoid this bike" — by most accounts these are honest, mechanically simple, and (once sorted) genuinely reliable machines; the issues above are mostly age and maintenance items rather than fundamental design flaws. The upright riding position, long-travel suspension and 25-litre tank still make it a credible green-lane and light-touring bike, not just a garage ornament — just go in expecting a project bike's paperwork trail rather than a dealer-serviced classic's.
